In the early days of man, some humans were capable of performing miracles, seeing beings known as [[Fae|Faeries]] and live for an exceptionally long time compared to normal humans. The techniques and knowledge that these individuals possessed and shared with one another came to be known as "Magic", and those who wield it was to be called "Mages" by their fellow humans.{{Qref|Lindel explains the origins of the term known as Magic.|vol = 3|chap = 15}}
Due to the previous war, many of those who deal with magic disappeared. [[Rahab]] had mentioned that there was movement between Russia and Sweden, which may be related to this war. Whatever the case, there is currently a shortage of youth with the born talents of magic. Measures have taken place to preserve these individuals, including soliciting random children and human trafficking.

Magic (魔法 Mahō) is the act of using magical energy to change the world around them, and can be utilized by Fae, Sleigh Beggies, Mages, and Witches. Sorcerers use a similar process but are known as sorcery instead.

History

In the early days of man, some humans were capable of performing miracles, seeing beings known as Faeries and live for an exceptionally long time compared to normal humans. The techniques and knowledge that these individuals possessed and shared with one another came to be known as "Magic", and those who wield it was to be called "Mages" by their fellow humans.[1]

But over time, fewer people were born with the ability to perform Magic[2]. Additionally, due to the last "Great War", many existing magical users died. It has since become unusual, but not rare, to find young people with magical abilities and abduct them into slavery to ensure the continuation of magic.[3][4]

Overview

Magic is the result of either using the energy inside one's body, which can be generated or absorbed through sleep and food, or by borrowing power from Faeries, Spirits, and Demons, in order to interfere, or outright break, the world's natural laws in order to get the results they want. This is a process that is sometimes called a miracle.[5][6]

While these magical users can access the world's natural laws with the help of magical beings and through sheer force of will, it's easier to perform with the help of chants and wands.[7]

For most sorcerers, they possess a magical core that acts as an internal organ that generates magical energy and pumps it through the body. It's noted to be passed down through genetics and intertwined with the other organs, but sometimes people with non-magical parents can be born with it and are adopted by magical households.[8]

Usage

Magic can is used by Mages to get the results that they want, these results vary in shape, form and the requirements to cast them.[9] It can be used for supplementary use such as teleportation, flight, purification and giving life to inanimate objects.[10][11][12][13] It can also be used for offensive purposes such as summoning forth spikes made out of shadows and breathing fire.[14][15]

Magic is also used when creating objects such as rings, which is commonly the work of an Artificer such as Angelica, or wands.[16][17] There are also Reagents, substances that have passed through human hands and hold magical energy.

Classifications

  • Sleigh Beggy (夜の愛し仔(スレイ・ベガ) Surei Bega, lit, Beloved child of the night): are the rarest among the different types of magical users, even to the point of them being nearly unheard of in this day and age [18]. They have the abilities of both a Mage and an Sorcerer. The main characteristic of a Sleigh Beggy is that they passively absorb and generate almost unlimited magical energy. However, their bodies are no stronger than any other mage and will eventually buckle under the constant strain and their bodies will cease to function [19]. It seems the fae are attracted to Sleigh Beggy, but their interactions are not always beneficial to the Sleigh Beggy. An untrained Sleigh Beggy may feel cursed as they often can't see or understand the neighbors influencing the world around them.
  • Mages (魔法使い(メイジ) Meiji, lit, Magician): are magic users who absorbs ambient magic from their surroundings to cast spells or by borrowing it from Faeries. However, the former tends to be very draining for the caster.[20][21]
  • Sorcerers (魔術師 Majutsu-shi): are different from the other magical users as they turn their own physical energy into magic to perform something known as sorcery.[22] Unlike Mages, they don't interfere with Natural Laws by breaking them, but instead they study these laws and learn to manipulate them.[23]
  • Witches (魔女 Majo): are magical users very similar to mages, but the differences is that they often delve into more forbidden arts, such as Curses, and choose to gather in groups known as covens.[24]
