Synopsis[]
Cartaphilus has been neutralised, and is in a deep sleep that may or may not last forever. Chise's body bares the scars of his pain. He is forever connected to Chise now, who is now burdened with two curses. At the invitation of the researcher Adolf Stroud, Chise is invited to attend "The College", an institution for young Alchemists, and Mages to learn to master their crafts in relative safety. Excited to explore her independence, Chose accepts and with Elias (not so secretly) in tow, enters a school with peers her own age and with similar issues and burdens as her own, and new role models to learn from.
Although Chise has made friends and alliances along the way since joining Elias, this is the first time she is finding connections to real peers in the world of magic who are close to her in age and experience. She soon learns that not everyone can be won over quickly, and that others may be harbouring secrets as dark as her own. Her reckless behaviour will have to change, and mature, if she is going to help her friends to overcome the challenges they face. Elias must face his growing jealousy, can he learn to give Chise room to form her own relationships that may not include him?
Chise must learn to become more mature, to stand back and let others fight their battles providing more considered support that weighs the cost of instinctual action against her own and other's safety. Will she learn to accept that it matters to her and the people she loves if she lives or dies? Will she find a way to live with the dragon and maintain her balance and newfound perspective? Or will her newfound independence change her into something else entirely? And how will Elias accept that she is no longer a child or a ward, and give her the space to grow without losing his own grip on himself?
A host of fantastic creatures, complicated characters and wonderful scenery are woven into a story that is about a coming of age as an individual inside the family unit she has created with Elias, Ruth and Silky at home. The fae returns, ever attracted to the Sleigh Beggy. Deeper magics are at work as Chise will see from the outside the deep impacts of others familial bonds, and other characters will learn as she has, to stand for themselves and choose to live.
