Introduction
|
Morrígan (モリガン, Mórrígan) is one of the old gods of Winter and Death.[2] Possibly a misunderstanding of the Celtic Goddess Cailleach. Since the Cailleach is said to follow the god of summer as he dies (Cernunnos or deer god). Also she becomes Brigid as the spring comes.
Appearance[]
The Winter Goddess is a tall woman with exceptionally long, dark and wavy hair with a motherly figure, and a pregnant belly. Her eyes are bright with white pupils. She's clad in a long dress that reaches down to her feet, and it's black from the ankles and upwards while the lower parts are white.[3]
When her true name is spoken, the winter goddess takes on a fierce appearance. Her hair and eyes change to a blazing red, as she summons her shield and blood red war spear adorned with thorns. While wielding her power she wears a bloodthirsty grin on her face while gleefully informing her enemies of their impending doom.
Personality[]
The mother comes off as a stoic and serious being while being presented in a regal presence, yet her demeanor changes somewhat when she takes notice of a branch from an oak mistletoe. As she takes ahold of it, her mood becomes much happier.[4]
The Winter Goddess clearly appreciates gifts.
When the Winter Goddess regains her true name and summons her power, her personality becomes bloodthirsty and sadistic. Before slaughtering the Sargent family guards she tells them to enjoy her beauty because it is the last sight they will see.
History[]
The Winter Goddess is first mentioned just before the night of Yule, an important cycle of the year that showcases the shift between the winter and the coming spring, by the Heralds of Yule and later by Elias.[5]
Yule Arc[]

The Winter Goddess later seen riding on top of another god, and it's revealed that she's pregnant as she unknowingly passes by Elias, Chise and Ruth. Before leaving, she takes notice and picks up a mistletoe.[6]
College Arc[]
Similar to their first encounter, the Winter Goddess is riding on top of the deer god, but is searching for Chise to receive her offering. She first stops by the cottage and asks Silver Lady and Joseph. When they tell her that Chise is not present, the Winter Goddess summons her crows to track her down.
During her next appearance, she manifests before Chise and Elias when they emerge from the ley lines. While inquiring about the offering, several of the Sargent servants attempt to spy but end up having their eyes plucked out by crows. To prevent this from happening to Chise, Elias instructs her on proper etiquette. During their discussion, the Sargent guards attempt to apprehend them so the Winter Goddess allows Chise to use her true name, Morrigan.
With her power restored, Morrigan unleashes a war frenzy and proceeds to massacre all of the guards on the property. She later assists in defeating Lizabeth while wielding Adam’s grudge as her new spear.
On Yule eve, Chise, accompanied by Elias, visits Morrigan to deliver her mistletoe. The goddess smiles before giving birth to her daughter and leaving night dew flowers behind as a thanks.

Skills and Abilities[]
As an old god, the full extent of the Winter Goddess's powers are unknown but she's known to hold power over the world of winter.[7] Being called a god of both winter and death, it's suspected that she holds some sort of powers related to both of these realms, and humans have celebrated and made offerings for her coming during the night of Yule, even since the times of old. As such, she's feared by even individuals such as Elias.[8]
Relationships[]
The Deer[]
Whether their relationship is that of friends or that of servant and mistress is unknown. They're both referred to as gods and while they haven't been seen exchanging words with one another, their presence together and the fact that she's riding him towards their destination suggests that they're on good terms, and that they hold some level of trust for one another.
Chise Hatori[]
Morrigan holds some fascination and respect for Chise, frequently referring to her as a robin. While Chise is searching for Philomelia, the goddess allows her to use her true name to assist.
Trivia[]
- The concept of the Winter Goddess is a slight alteration of the Goddess of Yule, a being that becomes the Great Mother before giving birth to the new Sun Goddess.[1]
