Necessity has no law. (背に腹は替えられない。, Se ni hara wa kae rarenai) is the 21st episode of the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.
Synopsis[]
Elias and Chise visit the witch's coven thanks to the invitation they received from Marielle. They had hoped that they may be able to cure Chise of her condition; however, the high priestess Phyllis admits even they can't and reveals she, too, is also suffering from a debilitating curse. Eventually, Elias kidnaps Stella, who was revealed to be possessed by Joesph, and later makes a deal with Chise in exchange for Stella's safety.

Elias reminisces about the people he's encountered over the years, and the one who stood out the most was Chise.
As the Jade Ariel hear that a Sleigh Beggy who managed to tame a rampaging dragon, Alice lends a helping hand to Adolf while also taking note of his lack of sleep. When Alice leaves to get some food, Adolf takes the opportunity to take a nap and is visited by Lindel through Merituuli. Taking a moment to apologize for his past mistakes before falling asleep.
Elsewhere, Chise and Elias visit the Witch's Coven, meeting Marielle, her companion, and high priestess Phyllis. But quickly learn that they cannot be of help to them. Hearing this upsets Marielle, but as Phyllis, even though she can't help them, asking for their help with their problem would be immoral. That being, Phyllis was cursed to be attached to a tree. Before they leave, Marielle whispers something into Elia's ear and gives him a note.
Elias then contacts a Fae and allows it to absorb his energy to find and meet with Torey. Together they research and experiment together until Elias returns home and encounters Simon, who had Elias deliver a basket of apples to Chise for him. Once they're done speaking, Elias finds Stella and kidnaps her.
Meanwhile, Chise sang a lullaby to help the dragon fall asleep before meeting up and striking a deal with the Jade Ariel. As Elias and Ruth return, the former tries to put Chise asleep. In her dream state, Chise dreams about Nevin and gains the courage to confront the others.
As she tries to enter the room, Joseph reveals himself to be possessing Stella to Elias. Chise then breaks into the room allowing "Stella" manages to escape, with Chise following suit shortly afterward, soon figuring; however, that's Joseph. Agreeing to make a deal with Joseph in exchange for a spell and Stella's safety, Chise accepts and teleports away before the others can stop them.

- Early within the episode when the faeries are chatting under the bench, the shop next to it have "Mahoutsukai no Yome" (Ancient Magus Bride's japanese name) written above the door.
