None so deaf as those who will not hear. (聞こうとしない者ほど説得が困難である。, Kikou to shinai mono hodo settoku ga kon'nandearu) is the 9th episode of the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.
Synopsis[]
After being kicked out of the house by Silver, Chise goes on a shopping trip with Ruth and is later accompanied by Angie and her familiar Hugo. The following day, Chise becomes acquainted with Joel and his Leánnan sídhe observer.
Summary[]
Ruth visits Isabel's grave before returning home to Chise. When Silver informs them that Elias still hasn't left his room within the past two weeks, they visit his room and ask that he come out, but he tells them that he'll remain for a little while longer. In Ruth's opinion, transforming into his monstrous form may have taken a lot of energy out of him. After eating, Silver kicks Ruth and Chise out of the house for them to go shopping.
Immediately afterward, they come across Angelica and Hugo, following them to a nearby village where they go shopping and discuss Chise's current situation. Chise gets angry at Angelica on the way home, but apologizes afterward before they return home. Once there, Chise and Ruth make another attempt at talking with Elias. As Elias doesn't respond, Chise walks into the room before getting trapped inside by a disfigured version of Elias' usual self. Elias assures Chise that he won't harm her and that he'll give a full explanation in the morning about his condition. They spend the night together, and after awakening from a nightmare, Chise finds a note from Elias telling her he'll return by nightfall.
Later, Chise and Ruth eat breakfast before venturing around the neighborhood in search of Elias. They even have a brief encounter with Simon, who is introduced to Ruth. While on their search, they come across an old man and a vampire or Leánnan sídhe that resides with him. As Ruth searches for Elias, Chise stays with the old man who serves her tea, introduces himself as Joel, and becomes acquainted with Chise.
Joel offers Chise to read one of his short stories, a love story inspired by his meeting with the vampire who reveals her history with Joel to Chise. As Chise leaves, the leánnan sídhe and Joel's eyes seem to meet once again, and she thanks Chise for visiting.
Afterward, Ruth telepathically informs Chise that he's found Elias, and shes rushes over to their position. There they find him lying in a pond, and Chise goes on to ask Elias to talk about himself at some point, in which he tells her that he'll need some time but nevertheless do it. Their conversation is then interrupted by a Selkie, Lindel's familiar, and tells them that Lindel has business with them.
