Introduction
|
One today is worth two tomorrows. (今日は明日2つ分の価値がある。, Kyō wa ashita 2tsu-bun no kachigāru) is the 2nd episode of the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.
Synopsis[]
Chise is introduced to and learns more about the creature known as Silky before traveling with Elias to London. Both of them meet up with Angelica Barley and her familiar. Without knowing Chise's true nature as a Sleigh Beggy, Angelica teaches Chise about Magic in practice and theory.
On their way home, Chise and Elias briefly talk about the apprentice's past before being greeted by a priest at their doorstep. While Chise is introduced to Simon, the priest hands out three new tasks for Elias, starting at the Dragons' Aerie on Island. Once they arrive, Chise is captured by a dragon and its rider.
Summary[]
Awakening in her room, Chise is given a pair of clothes to wear by Silver Lady and, after that, dragged into the kitchen by her, where Elias writes a letter. While Silver prepares breakfast, Elias details Silver's background to Chise. Once Elias is finished with his letter, he transforms it into a bird and has it fly away. Elias then informs Chise that she's been asleep for two days and figured she was emotionally exhausted, while Chise is perplexed by his mannerisms and appearance. As Chise starts to eat breakfast, Elias states they are going on their honeymoon.
Eventually, they take a train into London, where Elias had planned to introduce Chise to some acquaintances while he goes shopping. For the occasion, Elias transformed his head into a human one to avoid drawing any negative attention to himself. They then visit a magic shop owned by Angelica Barley, aka Angie, who is formally introduced to Chise as Elias' apprentice. When Angie learns how Elias saw her naked and later became engaged to her, she gut-punches Elias and demands that he takes a walk somewhere.
With Elias out of the picture, Angie formally introduces herself to Chise as an Artificer and a Mage. They're then joined by Angie's daughter Althea, who tries to have her mother train with her, but she refuses and shoos her daughter off. Despite her daughter having talent as a mage, Angie hoped she'd get a regular job instead.
Angie then asks Chise if she knows the difference between a Sorcerer and a Mage, to which, Chise doesn't. Hence, Chise Angie explains the differences between the two. She also shows Chise her arm that, after an accident, became bejeweled with gems, so she wears a sleeve to cover it up. Curiously, Chise asks if she'd be able to use Magic as well, and Angie suggests she give it a try and then summons her familiar Hugo into the room.
Using a crystal and Hugo's support while listening to Angie's instructions, Chise uses the crystal to create an icy poppy flower garden based on a memory of a child being held by her mother. Elias stops her midway to prevent the entire room from freezing over, and Angie demands to know who Chise is. He answers that she's a Sleigh Beggy, and Chise formally apologizes for what she did; however, Angie doesn't blame her, but Elias for withholding that she was a Sleigh Beggy.
Later, Angie provides Chise with everything she'll need for her apprenticeship.
While they walk home, Elias asks Chise if she likes poppy flowers, and she responds that it's not that she wants them, but they are something she vividly remembers. Elias then bluntly asks if Chise's parents are either dead or abandoned her. With an amused look, Chise calls him out for asking so bluntly, but Elias changes the subject claiming regardless of her background, she's there with him now.
Continuing onward, Chise admits that her mother committed suicide right before her, and Elias does not respond. Once they return home, a priest named Simon Cullum scolds Elias for making him wait so long. After Simon introduces himself, they all go inside Elias' House and sit in the living room after a back-and-forth argument between Simon and Elias. Simon tasks Elias with three tasks given to him by the Church because he had taken on an apprentice.
Before leaving, Simon takes the medicine that Elias makes and distributes it to the people who live in the village. Then, Elias and Chise run some errands and go on their "Honeymoon".
Their first task is dealing with a dragon in Iceland that grabs hold of Chise with its mouth. Soaring in the air, a man in a white robe, conveys to her his plan to take Chise to the land of dragons.
