The cowl does not make the monk. is the 4th episode of the second season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.
Synopsis[]
Summoned to Rahab's realm by Rahab herself. Chise and Ruth become acquainted with Rahab, who talks to them about Elias' past as Elias talks to Angelica about his thoughts about Chise since he first bought her.
Summary[]
Chise and Ruth are transported by an elusive mist to a different area where they're met by Rahab, who introduces herself to them. She also notes that she had charmed the brooch Chise wore that she'd know if anyone other than Elias wore it. Curious to know if Rahab was Lindel's master, Rahab confirms it and then asks what Chise is to Elias.
While washing pumpkins, Angie visits Elias and delivers some supplies to him. They then talk about Chise and the brooch she gave him around Christmas, which he wears to that day. Furthermore, he explains that he gave his old one to Chise, who answers what her relationship with Elias is to Rahab. Ruth also cuts in and explains that Chise is also his human teacher as well as his bride. Initially, put off by that last revelation, Rahab invites the two inside her cabin to discuss things further.
Inside Rahab's cabin, she prepares coffee for Chise, who comments that her personality matches Lindel and Elias after being served her coffee. Rahab found the comment amusing and then explained how she taught Elias Magic and how to be human after he visited her home one day. It's also revealed that Elias' perception of a bride was explained to him by her, which she regrets.
Meanwhile, Angie and Elias continue their talk about Chise, where Elias admits that at first, he was content not allowing Chise to die, but now he'd find it unbearable if she was harmed. Furthermore, he details Ruth's opinion of Chise of herself. A brief flashback then plays, showing Chise tasked with wearing Elias' brooch for her protection. Hearing this amuses Angie, which, in turn, perplexes Elias.
Continuing her conversation with Rahab, Chise mentions various emotions that Elias displayed, one of which made Rahab laugh out loud, and then explains his positive qualities. Hearing this leaves Rahab amazed, and Chise thanks her for teaching Elias all she knew because it ended up helping her purchase her when she was up for auction.
Before leaving, Rahab requests that Chise not inform Elias that they met, noting it was out of concern that she charmed his brooch, but admits it was actually as surveillance. This surprises Chise as Mages aren't supposed to lie, but Rahab notes that suppressing the truth is vital to being a Mage. As Chise was spirited away, Rahab said she trusted she'll always do the right thing. Chise then meets with Stella in front of Elias' House and soon meets up with Elias and Angie.
At College, Philomela experiments on the tea that Chise gave her and tosses it away after checking it several times, only to learn it's just tea with Magic imbued into it.
The next day, Hazel guides Chise, Elias, and Ruth to a shortcut to the College, a Phone Booth. Midway, they're confronted by what Hazel calls Hound Dogs, and he successfully negotiates with the dogs to grant them frequent passage. One of the Hound Dogs channels its voice through Chise, which shocks her, and three of them then hand Elias, Ruth, and Chise a scale from their bodies and have them swallow it. With that, the Hound Dogs take their leave.
Reaching the College, Chise asks Elias why he decided to make her his bride.
Elsewhere, Zoe visits Alexandra, and Philomela nearly walks in on them, hearing Chise's name mentioned by Zoe.
In her room, Lucy has a nightmare concerning her past in a print shop.
