Introduction
|
Those Awaiting a Star: Part 1 (星待つひと：前篇, Hoshi Matsu Hito: Zenpen) is first OVA of The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star.
Summary[]
Chise and Elias receive a package from Angelica that was supposed to be study material for Chise. One of the materials was a book that Chise had read in the past with a special place in her heart.
Plot Overview[]
Hugo helps Angelica, who prepared a particular order for what's suspected to be a new apprentice. Amid her incantation, she stops and adds a book she got from a used bookstore. Once finished, the finished item is placed into a raven construct and asked to be delivered to Elias and his apprentice Chise.
At Elias' House, Chise awakens and says good morning to Ruth. Later downstairs, as Elias reads a letter, Chise answers the door, and Silver Lady prepares breakfast. They're soon joined by Ruth, who kicks out a Gremlin. As they start eating breakfast, Chise notices that Elias is in a bad mood, and he asks her what her daily chores are. She answers that she'll be checking on the field, drying the herbs, and studying magic. The last answer intrigues Elias, who asks the book she'll be using as a reference, and Chise answers it's the one he gave her the other day. Elias then advises Chise not only to get learn more but also to gain more experience.
After this conversation, their doorbell rings, and Angelica's raven unloads its delivery onto Chise. Elias details that he ordered study material from Angelica for Chise. Once a brief explanation of the materials is given, Elias has Chise finish their breakfast, and Chise carries the materials to the study.
Once the materials were moved to the study, Chise asked permission to tidy it up because it was so dusty, and Elias gave it to her. Amid their tidying of the room, Chise spots the book Angelica wanted to provide her, "The Lonely Little Star". Intrigued to know more about it as Chise was his "human" teacher, as he was her "magic" teacher, Elias has Chise read it to him. Chise admits that she read the book as a child when she was little.
A flashback depicts Chise as a child whose mother voices her regret about having her and would later commit suicide. She'd later be adopted by her aunt Akiko and be raised with her cousins Daiki and Koki. One day during breakfast, Chise sees a ghostly apparition devour the breakfast on the table and, because of it, is too scared to eat it herself. Her refusal to eat breakfast upset her aunt, who contacted her uncle about how she didn't eat what she cooked for her and regrets taking Chise in. Unbeknownst to Akiko, Chise heard the conversation and ran away to the park area.
Haunted by the sight of the apparitions there, a little girl offers Chise a small mug of water, but an apparition there spooks her, causing her to spill the water and hurt the girl. When the girl's parents check on their child, Chise apologizes and runs away.
Within a forest, Chise trips over a giant rat spirit wearing a white mask that chases her into a building that protects her from the rat spirit and then meets the man named Riichi. Initially, Chise wanted to leave; however, she became fascinated by the various books stacked on the shelves shown in the main room. Riichi then introduces himself as the Magician in the Forest and welcomes Chise to the Library in the Forest.
