Summary[]

Riichi's past concerning how he not only became the Magician of the Forest, but his connection to the book placed upon the library's front desk is revealed. Before passing away, Riichi entrusts Chise with returning the book to its original owner, Mayumi, with whom Riichi has a regretful past.

Plot Overview[]

Riichi shows Chise a regretful memory of his that's connected to a book that he wants to be delivered to its original owner Mayumi Niikura. The memory depicts Riichi talking to Mayumi, and before she can inform him of her pre-arranged marriage, Riichi reveals that he already knew and congratulates her over it. Disheartened by Riichi's response, Mayumi recites a phrase that Chise once said, claiming that reading the last page of a book is her favorite. She then entrusts a book to Riichi that she has him promise to one day return and leaves him.

Riichi's monologue reveals that he was a lowly student, and Mayumi was the daughter of a wealthy family he was indebted to.

On the night Riichi tries to return the book, he trips and falls in a forest where a tree branch impales him through the right side of his abdomen, causing him to die. His spirit was then drawn to the library, where he became its prisoner. It wasn't until Riichi met Chise that he remembered everything and once again asked that Chise return the book to Mayumi. Understanding her task, Chise leaves the library as Riichi and the library disappear into thin air.

Soon, Chise visits the Niikura residence, hoping to return the book belonging to Mayumi, but learns from her great-granddaughter Maho she's in the hospital. Hastily, Chise runs to the hospital, and although the nurse receptionist politely refuses her to see Mayumi because of a rule that only family members are allowed to visit patients. Another nurse mistakes Chise for her great-granddaughter and allows her to see Mayumi, where she returns the book named, "Spring Will Be Missed". Realizing that the book was the same one she once gave to Riichi, Mayumi said she was happy that although he never saw him again, he returned the book after learning Chise's name; Mayumi hugged and thanked her.

That afternoon, Maho visits her great-grandmother with her children, Emily and Hiroto, while Chise returns to the forest where she finds the book, "The Lonely Little Star". As if speaking to Riichi, Chise says that Mayumi thanked her for returning the book. Chise then recalls lying on the library ground, staring at the ceiling that sparkled like stars as Riichi recited a verse from "The Lonely Little Star". Riichi then claims that even in the darkest times, she'll find a light that illuminates her life, like the star child. Despite this, Chise didn't believe it sometime after Riichi departed from the mortal realm.

Eventually, Chise leaves her extended family's home, and her aunt and cousins move back in; however, she leaves behind, "The Lonely Little Star" book.

Back in the present, Chise was surprised that the book she once left behind was returned to her. Elias then fetches a book called, "The Legend of Tono". One of the pages depicts a library called Mayoiga, and it's suspected the library Chise visited was that place. After talking more in-depth about the library's history, Chise realizes that it's nearly dark out and laments that they didn't finish cleaning, but Elias claims they can finish that tomorrow. Before heading off to dinner, Elias asks Chise what she plans on doing with the book, and she answers she'll give it a proper read-through.
