You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. (目的達成に犠牲はつきもの。, Mokuteki tassei ni gisei wa tsukimonodesu) is the 20th episode of the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.
Synopsis[]
During the auction, the dragon there escapes, and left with no other alternative to stop it, Chise absorbs its magical energy. By doing this, Chise's left arm contracts what's called a Dragon's Curse and although she accepts it, Elias isn't too pleased by it himself. However, the mysterious woman from the auction visits Chise hoping to collect the payment Chise promised her, but instead tries to heal her arm, only to fail. Intrigued by Chise, Marielle asks her to join her coven, claiming there's a chance someone there would be able to help her, and Chise considers it.
Summary[]
As the dragon is wreaking havoc in the auction house, the group of Mages and Sorcerers tries to distract it as Chise and Elias attempts to get closer to it. The duo manages to get onto its back, and the dragon breaks through the building, making its way outside and into the sky while still carrying Elias, Chise, and Ruth on its back.
As Elias falls off after protecting Chise and Ruth follows suit, and Chise takes off her magic absorbing bracelet and starts consuming the dragon's magic to stabilize it. In doing so, Chise causes the dragon to crash land in the water below, and her left hand becomes deformed when she's pulled out of the water.
Eventually, Chise awakens in her room with Shannon by her side and is amazed by her left arm. Angie, Hugo, and Elias then barge into the room. After Angie scolds Chise for acting selfishly, Lindel communicating from a magical two-way mirror, explains that Chise has obtained a Dragon's Curse. As Chise accepts the situation for what it is, she spends one of the next coming days outside to meet Redcurrant before talking things through with Elias and Ruth.
Back at home, they meet up with a Witch called Marielle, and she tries to heal Chise's deformed left arm, but fails. Marielle then tries to convince Chise to consider becoming part of her coven. Although Elias refuses on her behalf, Chise is interested, and Marielle instructs them on how to meet the coven. She later leaves, and soon Stella comes by to visit to invite Chise to her birthday party, but leaves shortly after as Chise feels unwell. Chise is left coughing up blood while commenting on how ironic the situation has become, prompting Elias to hug her as he tells Chise they'll visit the coven.
Having learned of Chise's new curse through Stella, Joseph starts to wonder how it'd react to his own.
